The history of Hypo Group Alpe Adria reaches back to 1896, when Hypo Kärnten was founded. Initially concentrated on financing public institutions, it became u universal bank in 1982. The bank started to expand outside the borders of Austria with the opening of a leasing subsidiary in Udine in 1988.
Six years later, in 1994, the bank opened a leasing subsidiary in Croatia – Hypo-Leasing Kroatien d.o.o. The company was founded with a 90% share belonging to Hypo-Alpe-Adria Bank AG and a 10% share belonging to Hypo-Leasing Kärnten GmbH, and it started operation in 1997.
The Group started its banking operations in Croatia in 1996 by establishing Hypo Banka Croatia d.d.. Three years later, under a Group decision, the bank changed its name to Hypo Alpe-Adria-Bank d.d..
In the course of the first ten yeas of business, Hypo bank in Croatia founded several daughter companies, in answer to growing market demand for focus on individual financial business branches.
In 2007, the strong German bank BayernLB acquired a share in Hypo Group, giving it new business swing.
In the March of 2009, the process of merging Slavonska banka Osijek, the strongest bank in east Croatia, to Hypo bank was completed. The process had started back in 1999 with the capital merger of the two banks. With the process concluded, the united bank entered a new business period and made a big step toward the position of service leader.
On 30th December 2009, the Republic of Austria became the sole 100-percent shareholder in Hypo Alpe-Adria-Bank International AG.
